A-san works for a Japanese company. English is the main language used in the workplace, but Japanese is also used occasionally.
A-san’s goal is to be able to facilitate meetings in Japanese.
Lesson length: 50 minutes
① Casual Conversation: 15–20 minutes
We start each lesson with casual conversation as a warm-up.
I give feedback on expressions that could be improved or expressions that would be useful to learn. However, the purpose of this activity is for A-san to freely express their thoughts and talk about what has been happening in their life, so I make sure not to interrupt the flow of the conversation with too much feedback.
② Fill-in-the-Blank Dictation: 10 minutes
A-san practices dictation using expressions that native Japanese speakers commonly use in everyday conversation.
We also check the meaning, context, and nuances of the expressions.
Even when learners can hear the words correctly, they often do not fully understand the nuances of how the expressions are used. This is something we pay particular attention to.
③ Role-Play: 20 minutes
A-san’s goal is to become able to facilitate meetings in Japanese.
First, we practice the language skills needed to participate in meetings and express ideas in Japanese.
❶ Confirm the date, time, location, and participants of a meeting
❷ Organize and present information, such as the current situation, future plans, and problems
❸ Ask questions about something another participant has said that is unclear
❹ Ask for specific information, such as deadlines and who is responsible for a task
❺ Briefly explain the context before asking a question; ask follow-up questions and clarify anything that is ambiguous
❻ Confirm information, such as your understanding of the discussion, decisions that have been made, assigned tasks, and deadlines
❼ Express your own opinions while adjusting the level of certainty
❽ Express agreement or disagreement and give reasons
…and more.
We do not necessarily follow the curriculum exactly as planned in every lesson.
For example, if A-san feels like talking more on a particular day, we can spend more time on casual conversation.
The lesson is adjusted according to A-san’s needs, interests, and goals.

B-san has had very little experience studying Japanese.
B-san married a Japanese person in their home country and came to Japan to start working.
English is used at work, but B-san needs to study Japanese for two reasons:
① To manage daily life in Japan
② To find a better job
Lesson length: 50 minutes
In B-san's lessons, we use the textbook Irodori: Japanese for Life in Japan.
① Casual Conversation: About 5 minutes
We have a casual conversation as a warm-up.
We talk about recent events in B-san's life, using some simple English and the Japanese that B-san already knows.
② Review of the Previous Lesson: About 5–10 minutes
Before starting something new, we review what we studied in the previous lesson.
③ Learning Japanese Characters: About 15 minutes
・Hiragana / Katakana
In addition to practicing writing, we use activities such as karuta and dictation to help B-san connect sounds with written characters.
・Kanji
We practice the kanji that appear in Irodori.
④ Irodori: About 25 minutes
Using Irodori, we focus mainly on conversation practice.
※ B-san is busy and therefore takes one lesson per week. However, for beginners, I recommend taking lessons two or three times a week.
In particular, if you do not normally use Japanese in your daily life, I feel that one lesson per week is not enough.
