Studying Japanese consistently on your own is an impressive achievement.
I'm sure you've developed your own ways of memorizing kanji and vocabulary, and that you practice your listening skills by watching Japanese anime and dramas.
I truly respect your dedication.
Becoming fluent in a foreign language takes an enormous amount of time and effort.
Before we continue, let's briefly look at one of the key factors in achieving fluency.
(The actual research is much more complex, but I'll explain it in a simple way.)
One of the most important factors in speaking fluently is cognitive load—the amount of mental effort your brain has to use while processing language.
When your cognitive load is high, it becomes difficult to communicate smoothly, even if you already know the words.
For example, you may carefully follow what someone is saying, but still fail to understand the whole message. One possible reason is that your brain has not yet learned to connect sounds with meaning automatically. Because your brain is busy decoding each word, it has fewer mental resources available to understand the sentence as a whole. This is what we call cognitive load.
The same thing happens when speaking.
For example, imagine you are trying to express an idea but hesitate because you are thinking about which grammar pattern to use. Your attention shifts to choosing the correct expression, causing you to pause, lose your train of thought, or even be unable to finish the sentence.
To reduce this cognitive load, you need to develop automaticity.
Automaticity means being able to retrieve and use the language you have learned without consciously thinking about it.
The good news is that many of the things you are already doing—studying kanji, vocabulary, and grammar, watching Japanese dramas, and listening to podcasts—are exactly what helps build this automaticity.
Your daily efforts are laying the foundation for fluent communication.
So, how do you develop automaticity?
The answer is repeated practice. However, not just any repetition will do. What you need is meaningful repetition—practice that involves understanding and communication rather than simply repeating forms mechanically.
For example, you could:
write a diary about your own experiences and thoughts,
read the same manga several times,
or watch the same drama repeatedly.
Because you already know the story, your brain can focus less on understanding the content and more on connecting the Japanese expressions with their meanings.
Shadowing is also considered an effective way to develop automaticity, especially for connecting sounds with meaning. However, shadowing is most effective when you already understand the meaning of what you are repeating. Simply imitating the sounds without understanding them is much less beneficial.
Studying on your own is absolutely essential.
However, if your goal is to develop automaticity, interacting with other people is just as important.
In a lesson, you have many opportunities for meaningful repetition through real communication.
Even outside the classroom, ordering food in Japanese, chatting with friends, or simply using Japanese in daily life in Japan can all become meaningful practice.
Another key element is feedback.
If incorrect language becomes automatic, those mistakes can become difficult to correct later.
One of the most important roles of a professional Japanese teacher is to provide timely and appropriate feedback without interrupting the flow of communication. When feedback is clear and makes sense to you, you can quickly adjust your language and build better habits.
If you've started to feel that studying alone has its limits, why not try learning with a professional Japanese teacher?
At Furukawa Mika Japanese School, I strive to create a relaxed and welcoming environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves.
I value each student's personality, experiences, and ideas, and I provide careful, individualized feedback to help them communicate more naturally and confidently.
Through thoughtful questions and conversation, I also help students develop their ideas more clearly so that they can express themselves in greater depth and have richer, more meaningful conversations in Japanese.
Trial lessons are available throughout the year.

写日记,记录自己的经历和想法;
反复阅读同一本漫画;
